Η Δεινή Θέση της Ελλάδας και το Κίνημα για την Κατάργηση της Δουλείας

Οι Αμερικανοί είδαν στην Ελληνική Επανάσταση ένα συμβολισμό των αγώνων που διεξάγονταν στη χώρα τους κατά της δουλείας, συνδέοντας τις δικές τους εσωτερικές ανησυχίες με το ενδιαφέρον για την ελληνική σύρραξη.

Έγχρωμοι παρατηρητές στις ΗΠΑ ήταν εκείνοι που πρώτοι άρχισαν να συνδέουν την Ελληνική Επανάσταση με τη δουλεία στην Αμερική. Αυτή η ‘μαύρη’ εκδοχή του Φιλελληνισμού εμφανίστηκε στο σημαντικότερο κείμενο έγχρωμου συγγραφέα υπέρ της κατάργησης της δουλείας στη δεκαετία του 1820— πρόκειται για το έργο του David Walker Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World. Ωστόσο, για τους Αφροαμερικανούς και τους Λευκούς υπέρμαχους της κατάργησης της δουλείας, η πολιτική καταπίεση που ασκούσαν οι Οθωμανοί σε βάρος των Ελλήνων και η πώληση Ελληνίδων και Ελληνόπουλων στα σκλαβοπάζαρα ωχριούσε μπροστά στη φρίκη της δουλείας στον αμερικανικό νότο.

Παρόμοιες επικρίσεις για ρατσισμό και υποκρισία έγιναν κατά την υποδοχή της Ελληνίδας Σκλάβας. Η εφημερίδα του Frederick Douglass North Star δημοσίευσε μια σαρκαστική κριτική για το έργο: «Λυπόμαστε και αγαπάμε τη φτωχή και ντροπιασμένη Ελληνοπούλα... Και στην συγκινημένη καρδιά και στο παρατηρητικό μάτι ΟΛΕΣ ΟΙ ΣΚΛΑΒΕΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΔΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΟΛΟΙ ΟΙ ΔΟΥΛΕΜΠΟΡΟΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟΥΡΚΟΙ, κακοί, σκληροί και μισητοί και είναι τα ονόματά τους Χασάμ, Σελίμ, Τζέιμς ή Χένρι».
